- Thomas was serving as a Fireman, Trimmer on the Llandovery Castle, the job of Trimmer was to control the balance of coal in the stores below deck, when she was sunk by a German U-boat. The U-boat also destroyed all, but one of the lifeboats. All but 24 of the passengers and crew perished, including 14 nurses from the Canadian Medical Core. The sinking was later a subject of a war crime trial, where two of the officers of the submarine were sentenced to 4 years, although they soon escaped.
