- Ryme Cyclist's Fatal Injuries
Jury's Rider at Yeovil Inquest
Returning a "misadventure" verdict.
a Jury at a Yeovil inquest. On Tuesday. on a 44-year-old cyclist, who died
from injuries received in a collision with a motor car at Melbury Osmond, added a rider that the car driver should have exercised more care.
The cyclist Cecil Harry Bowditch, a farm worker of Church Farm cottages Ryme Intrinsica died early on Sunday morning at Yeovil Hospital, where he was removed after the accident at the Junction of Yetminster lane with the Yeovil - Dorchester Road on the previous evening.
The car driver Fred Ford, a motor mechanic, of Ingleside Cottage, Ryme Intrinsica who was accompanied by his brother John William Ford, told the Deputy Coroner for South-Somerset (Mr. John Rutter) that on his way home from the Rest and Welcome Inn he saw Bowditch, who was one of two cyclists turn into the Yetminster lane and he followed in the car.
"He was taking up a good half of the road and was wobbling" he said.
I pulled out to the right hand side of the road and tried to get past. him the next thing was that I heard his handlebar or knee touch the side of the car and I pulled up as quickly as I could. Bowditch was lying in the road, unconscious, and with my brother's help I got him into the car and took him to hospital.
Questioned by his solicitor, Mr G. N. Porter, Ford said that Bowditch was very nervous when cycling in the car headlights and had had previous accidents. John William Goatley, Chaple-Lane, Yetminster, who was cycling home with Bowditch said that when they saw the lights of a car coming from behind Bowditch went on ahead turning into Yetminster Lane with the car following. There was "a bump" and he found Bowditch lying in the road.
PC. Doo told the Coroner that he made inquiries at the inn and ascertained that all four men had consumed a moderate amount of liquor, but none of them showed signs of intoxication when they left the Premises.
Dr. J. W. G. Weddle said that cause of death was due to a fractured skull expressing agreement with the jury's verdict the Coroner said that a prudent motorist would have waited until the cyclist had ceased wobbling before endeavouring to pass. Had that been done the accident would not have occurred. [5, 6]
