    Notes
    • There is no record of a marriage from 1912 to 1928 - Grace Taubman was always quite elusive about her marriage and so it is possible that they were never married. Also, it has been suggested that he had been married before and it is unlikely that he would have been divorced.

The marriage was finally discovered and on the marriage certificate, Thomas is a widower which implies he had been waiting for an earlier wife to die before he could make Grace Taubman an honest woman. Witnesses were George Bailey and Edwin Rayner.

  • Notes
    • Thomas Cotton was born in Hanley in 1885 and was living in Liverpool when he met Grace Taubman. He was in the RAMC as a chef at that time, serving in the First World War. There is no evidence of he and Grace being married between 1912 and 1926 - this may have beed due to him already being married and may have led to his estrangement from his father and the less than keen attitude of Grace Taubman's parents to the match - this was also ascribed to his being much older. Their marriage was subsequently found to have taken place in Bedford in December 1935 - the marriage certificate states that he was a widower so he may have had to wait for his first wife to die before he could remarry.

He was a chef for the majority of his working life and it is believed he was a billiards champion when he was living in Hanley, presumably in his late teens & early twenties. He worked in hotels across England and Wales but also spent some time working in hotels in Cape Town.

During the 1914/18 war, he was in the RAMC abd there is a photograph of him with guests at Fazakerley where he was stationed and where he met Grace.

He was not in the army in 1918 when Thomas was born but was living in Liverpool at 69 Queens Road, Everton - the same as when Grace and Edward was born. They were in Betys y Coed when Joan was born in 1923 and presume he went to work there after Edward was born in 1921. Eirlys was born in Hastings in 1927 and he was working in a hotel there at that time.

He subsequently moved the family to Dagenham, probably in 1928, where the family were living when Eirlys died and Peter was born. They were living in Morden in 1933.
