- Many thanks for the baptismal details for Ada Ann; it's good to have
another one for the collection and now we have her DOB too.
What you have is the entry from the Roman Catholic Baptismal register for
the Church in which Ada was baptised.
Translated (and allowing for the priest's truly terrible attempts at Latin
names!) you have:
Ada Ann Taubman born 24th November 1889, daughter of William and Mary
Taubman nee Kelly, was baptised sub conditione (conditionally) on 24th
February 1911. Her female sponsor (godmother if you like) was Mary R ....
can't read the rest of her surname.
The second part of the baptismal entry deals with Ada's marriage and says
literally:
Herself, on 28th February 1911, joined together in matrimony with Thomas
James Purcell in the Church of St Alphonsus in Liverpool - followed by the
priest's signature.
The sub conditone bit refers to the fact that she is an adult being
baptised to allow her to marry in an RC church. So, either she was
baptised into the Church of England/Methodist/etc/etc faith as a child, or
she was never baptised at all.
A RC priest will not marry anyone who is not RC, so it was common for this
sort of baptism to take place, if the RC partner (or their family!) felt
strongly about their faith.
It is also common (and can be very useful to us genealogists!) to see
marriage details at the bottom of an RC baptism entry. There will be an
entry in St Alphonsus marriage register, which will give fuller details ie
fathers names and witnesses etc.
Do you know what church Ada was baptised in? - it's impossible to tell
from the entry and it wasn't necessarily St Alphonsus.
