1201 The Rangers were part of the 56th London Brigade and were involved in the Battle of Le Transloy, on the 7th the advance, which has stalled a week earlier was resumed and the 56th Division attacked Hazy, Dewdrop and Spectrum Trenches in the afternoon but was forced back by nightfall and the Germans reoccupied Rainy Trench which had been left empty. Wakely, George Cole (I4361)

1202 The reason for the name Albert, which occurs no where else in the family tree, at least so far, could be that Prince Albert, Queen Victorias consort, died on the 14th of December, just 2 days before William Albert's birth. Taubman, William Albert (I2655)

1203 The Redlynch estate was owned at this time by the Ilchester Estate, so it seems Williams promotion to Gamekeeper, prompted his move from Farley to Redlynch. Batten, William (I137)

1204 The regimental war diaries show the Batalion were all digging in on Purple trench (P.30), on what looks like the Warloy-Headauville-Forceville line. On the 18th the diary states "Work as yesterday. Heavy Gas Shelling on Right Bde Sector, causualties 5 OR (other ranks) KinA, 2 OR W in A, 2nd Lt Casey W in A (Gas), 41 OR W in A (Gas). 2 plattons of A company move west of thier camp 500 yards out of gas affected area". On the 19th "Work as yesterday. 1 OR W in A, 4 OR W in A (Gas).

It's likely Arthur was one of those gased and killed on the 18th. There are 5 members of the 14th Battalion listed as killed on the 19th, but only one on the 18th. Those listed on the 19th with Arthur are

1209 The Rev H Brynford conducted the service with Mrs Barter at the organ for the hymns "Abide with me" and "Now the day is over". It was a well attended service with many familiar Sydling names in attendance in addition to Family Members.

"Mrs Crabb had lived in Sydling since 1918, having come to South View, where both she and her late husband farmed for many years. Mrs Crabb was also in business as the local bus proprietor for many years. She is survived by two daughters"

1220 There is a good chance, Sarah is Sarah Burbridge who married George Mullins in Beaminster on the 15 August 1819, witnessed by George Marsh and Sarah Marsh, all four of which made their marks. I can't find any children to this couple in Beaminster, which would make sense if they are the George and Sarah who moved to Yetminster. The timing is about right for the birth of Sarah who was baptised in Yetminster in April of 1820. Family: George Mullins / Sarah (Mullins) (F20)

Clark, Sarah Jane (I2663)

1224 There is no record of a marriage from 1912 to 1928 - Grace Taubman was always quite elusive about her marriage and so it is possible that they were never married. Also, it has been suggested that he had been married before and it is unlikely that he would have been divorced.

The marriage was finally discovered and on the marriage certificate, Thomas is a widower which implies he had been waiting for an earlier wife to die before he could make Grace Taubman an honest woman. Witnesses were George Bailey and Edwin Rayner.
Family: Thomas Cotton / Grace Taubman (F779)

1225 There were no Bowditch families in Wooton Fitzpaine so my assumption is that Bowdage and Bowditch are the same, especially with a Dorset Accent Bowdage, William (I228)

1226 They shared the main farm house with the farmer Frank Partridge and.his family. Alan can remember the horses were called Prince and Blackbird, and Frank had a Austin 10 car with a trialler which they used to ride in the kids and not the horses. Alan used to ride the horses down to the Blacksmiths when they needed shoeing and ride them back after school.

1235 Thomas Cotton was born in Hanley in 1885 and was living in Liverpool when he met Grace Taubman. He was in the RAMC as a chef at that time, serving in the First World War. There is no evidence of he and Grace being married between 1912 and 1926 - this may have beed due to him already being married and may have led to his estrangement from his father and the less than keen attitude of Grace Taubman's parents to the match - this was also ascribed to his being much older. Their marriage was subsequently found to have taken place in Bedford in December 1935 - the marriage certificate states that he was a widower so he may have had to wait for his first wife to die before he could remarry.

He was a chef for the majority of his working life and it is believed he was a billiards champion when he was living in Hanley, presumably in his late teens & early twenties. He worked in hotels across England and Wales but also spent some time working in hotels in Cape Town.

During the 1914/18 war, he was in the RAMC abd there is a photograph of him with guests at Fazakerley where he was stationed and where he met Grace.

He was not in the army in 1918 when Thomas was born but was living in Liverpool at 69 Queens Road, Everton - the same as when Grace and Edward was born. They were in Betys y Coed when Joan was born in 1923 and presume he went to work there after Edward was born in 1921. Eirlys was born in Hastings in 1927 and he was working in a hotel there at that time.

He subsequently moved the family to Dagenham, probably in 1928, where the family were living when Eirlys died and Peter was born. They were living in Morden in 1933.

1237 Thomas was serving as a Fireman, Trimmer on the Llandovery Castle, the job of Trimmer was to control the balance of coal in the stores below deck, when she was sunk by a German U-boat. The U-boat also destroyed all, but one of the lifeboats. All but 24 of the passengers and crew perished, including 14 nurses from the Canadian Medical Core. The sinking was later a subject of a war crime trial, where two of the officers of the submarine were sentenced to 4 years, although they soon escaped. Purcell, Thomas James (I2692)

1238 Thomas's estate totaled £73 2s and was assigned to his widow Mary Ann Scadden, by adminstration. his occupation was given as labourer. Scadden, Thomas Warren (I3029)

1239 Tilly came to stay with James and Nellie Crabb during the 2nd World War, along with her daughter Doris, while Doris's husband Gordon served with the Royal Navy. Crabb, Matilda (I79)
