    DESCRIPTION + / -
A First World War National Shell Factory was established at Lambeth Road Tramway Carriage Works in 1915. The Liverpool Corporation offered the Liverpool Munitions Committee the works of their Tramway Department to be used as a depot for issuing material and rectifying and finishing the shell of their contractors. It was managed by the Manager of the Corporation Tramways. The lay-out proved particularly suitable; the works being equipped with a large number of machines, which were reinforced with new tools. Skilled labour was transferred from the Tramways Department and the capital expenditure was only £22,000. In October 1918, 363 people were employed of which 87 per cent were women.
