    • Farmer Died as he worked by himself

A Middlemarch farmer who had a history of heart trouble probably collapsed and struck his head against the metal stanchion of a barn in which he was stacking hay bales, an inquest at Dorchester was told.

The farmer Mr William Gooding, a bachelor, of Grange Farm, Middlemarsh, died from inhalation of vomit due to being in a coma after fracturing his skull. He was 68.

The Central Dorset Coroner Mr Morris Bally, recorded a verdict of Dead by misadventure.

Mr Gooding's housekeeper Miss Olive Foot, told the Coroner how she became worried about him when he did not return to the house for his evening meal at 6pm. and her calls were not answered.

He had come to the house earlier in the afternoon for a cup of tea because he was sweating.

With a neighbouring farmer, Miss Foot went to look for Mr Gooding and found his body in a barn near one of the metal stanchions. A ladder was still propped up against the hay stack. Mr Gooding had a small cut on his forehead.

The Coroner said it appeared that Mr Gooding's head struck the stanchion as he fell, possibly through his having a heart attack.
